Nigeria’s Chief Justice sacked for false asset declaration
Nigeria’s top judge was sacked on Thursday by a tribunal that convicted him of falsely declaring his assets.
Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari in January, a few weeks before the West African nation held its presidential election.
The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), which rules on allegations of false asset declaration, said it had found Onnoghen guilty of hiding the extent of his wealth and removed him from office.
“Having regard to Section 23(2) of the Code of Conduct Tribunal and Bureau Act, the defendant has clearly contravened the Code of Conduct for Public Officers and he is here by convicted,” a statement read by the CCT chairman Danladi Umar said.
In Nigeria, the chief justice holds a key role in determining the outcome of a presidential election is results are challenged by a candidate and a tribunal is formed.
The CCT also banned Onnoghen from holding any public office for 10 years, and has ordered that any assed that he failed to account for be forfeited to the state, including five bank accounts.
