Nigeria’s newly re-elected leader Muhammadu Buhari once again pledged to focus on restoring the economy, intensifying security and fighting graft, as he took to Twitter to express his joy at winning the elections.
The 76-year-old leader, who had an unassailable lead by the time vote tallies came in from the last state, said his victory, was a ‘victory for Nigerian democracy’.
“The new administration will intensify its efforts in security, restructuring the economy and fighting corruption. We have laid down the foundation and we are committed to seeing matters to the end,” his tweet read.
He thanked Nigerians for electing him and showered praises on his campaign team for pulling through despite the numerous challenges they encountered.
Millions of Nigerians cast their ballot on Saturday, 23 February, to elect a leader for Africa’s largest population and top oil producer.
Many of Nigeria’s youth, who make up more than 50% of the country’s population, cast votes for the first time.
Overall voter turnout, however, was not as impressive. Only a third of the country’s population turned up to vote. This was blamed in part to the fact that elections were postponed for a week, posing possible logistical challenges for voters.
Saturday’s election was also marred by outbreaks of violence.
Scores of people have been killed since the vote, according to a monitoring organization – though police are yet to provide an official death toll.
Buhari promised on Wednesday, that his security agencies would ensure those who were behind the electoral violence would face justice.
Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated the Nigerian leader on Wednesday morning and wished Buhari good health and success as he begins his second term.
“Your election victory is a clear demonstration of the trust and confidence the people of Nigeria have in your ability to lead your country to greater heights of progress,” he said in a statement.
“Accept, Your Excellency and dear brother, my renewed assurance of close cooperation of the Republic of Kenya and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Supporters of Buhari also celebrated his victory on Wednesday and wished him strength to continue ruling the country.

But not everyone was happy with the result. Some Nigerians took to Twitter to accuse the leader of stealing the victory.
