Four gunmen were killed when Nigerian police carried out a raid on a suspected hideout of kidnappers in the eastern state of Taraba, a police spokesman said on Tuesday.

A divisional police officer in Bali local government area of the state had led the operation to confront the kidnappers who were hiding on a mountain early Monday, said David Misal, a spokesperson for the police.

Misal said the four kidnappers were killed in a gunfight with policemen during the raid. The kidnappers, according to him, had been operating randomly in that part of the state.

The operation followed a tip-off that the kidnappers were regrouping to carry out more attacks, he said, adding arms and ammunition were recovered from the hideout.
