Nigerian army says has arrested Avengers leader
Nigeria’s military says it has arrested a suspected leader of the Niger Delta Avengers militant group alongside other men suspected of being part of the militants that have carried out attacks on oil and gas infrastructure in the country.
The leader Isaac Romeo and two other men were arrested in Calabar over the weekend, the military said.
A fourth man was arrested on Tuesday in Edo state, north of Delta state. He is thought to be responsible for an attack on a pipeline operated by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) and Nigerian energy company Shoreline last month.
The Avengers are one of the groups blamed for the series of attacks that have caused a loss of about 700,000 barrels per day of oil production this year.
They declared a ceasefire late last month in an open letter to the government, but the military is continuing to arrest suspected militants for fear of further attacks during talks.
