Nigerian army general jailed for cowardice
The Nigerian military has reportedly dismissed a Brigadier General and sentenced him to six months imprisonment.
General Enitan Ransome-Kuti was accused of cowardly behaviour, abandoning weapons and negligence of duty after a Boko Haram attack on the town of Baga, north east Nigeria, Nigerian Premium Times newspaper reports.
Ransome-Kuti is the son of Beko Ransome-Kuti, a foremost Nigerian pro-democracy activist who died in 2006 and cousin to Afrobeat star Fela Kuti.
The general was arraigned before a military court sitting in Mogadishu Barracks, Abuja in May.
The court however dismissed the charge relating to cowardly behaviour, following a no-case submission by the defendant. It said the officer was right in withdrawing his troops in the face of superior firepower from Boko Haram.
Ransome Kuti was sentenced to six months imprisonment for loss of equipment to the terrorist group, and further dismissed from the service for “negligently performing his duties.”
Ransome-Kuti was arrested alongside other senior officers in the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in baga in January.
The others include the Commanding Officers of the 134 and 174 Battalions, Liutenant Colonel Haruna and Major Aliyu. The two battalions were under the MNJTF during the period.
