The Nigerian government on Friday warned of possible floods in 102 local government-run areas across 28 states during this year’s raining season.

Muhammadu A Muhammed, head of the National Emergency Management Agency, who called on state emergency management agencies and frontline local governments to be prepared, also advised them to sensitize vulnerable communities to get ready for safe evacuation.

Mohammed suggested that garbage, weeds, water hyacinths should be removed from drainages, water channels, and all avenues for river run-offs so as to allow free flow of floodwaters.

Flooding is one of the most frequent natural disasters in Nigeria.
