Chibok girls

Nigeria is verifying if would-be bomber is one of kidnapped Chibok girls, the girl turned herself in, in Cameroon, before detonating explosives. Boko Haram has been using girls to carry out attacks.

It’s been almost two years since Boko Haram kidnapped the 270 girls from their school in northern Nigeria. The jihadist group released a video of the girls soon after and since then, many Nigerians have given up on seeing them come home.

This weekend though, there’s been a dramatic twist. Two girls were caught just over the border in Cameroon – both wearing explosive belts. One of them has told local officials she was a Chibok schoolgirl. Both girls are to be flown to Doula, for further checks.

Nigeria’s presidency says it’s working with Cameroon’s authorities.

Two Chibok parents will be flown over the border to help identify the girl. If her story checks out, officials hope she can help find the others but it will also confirm fears here, that many of the girls have been radicalised during their captivity.

A spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari is urging caution. He says both girls are 10 years old far younger than those who were kidnapped.
