Nigeria to shut borders ahead of regional polls

Read < 1 minute

Nigeria’s  Goodluck Jonathan has approved the closure of all land borders ahead of this weekend’s regional elections.

The same move was made before national polls last month, a statement said on Wednesday.

The closure was to take effect from midnight on Wednesday until Midday Nigeria time on Sunday.

The permanent secretary at Nigeria’s Interior Ministry said the move was meant to allow for peaceful conduct during voting process over the weekend.

On the 28th March, Nigeria held general elections which saw Goodluck Jonathan lose to his challenger Muhammadu Buhari.

The elections were conducted fair and transparent despite violence in the northern part of Nigeria.
