Nigeria’s national security agency on Wednesday said it had foiled a plot by Islamist militant group Boko Haram to attack U.S. and British embassies in the capital, Abuja.

The Department of State Services announced that it had arrested five suspects who were allegedly the masterminds of the thwarted plot.

According to the DSS, the attacks were set to be carried out on March 26.

In a statement, the DSS said the Islamic State affiliated group had already perfected plans to attack the two embassies.

Boko Haram has waged an eight-year insurgency in West Africa with the aim of instating a strict Islamic rule.

The group has killed thousands in Nigeria and forced hundreds of thousands more to flee their homes.

According to statistics, about 117,000 British nationals travel to Nigeria each year.
