African football giant suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Madagascar in their last Group stage game in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles came up against a spirited Madagascar squad that showed no inexperience, a big achievement for a team that is featuring in the competition for the first time ever.

The goals were scored by Lalaina Nomenjanahary in the 13th minute and Carolus Andriamahitsinoro in the 53rd minute.

The result means the south African islanders progress into the Round of 16 as Group winners with seven points, one ahead of the Super Eagles, who also progress as runners up.

In their first two matches, the islanders drew with Guinea 2-2 before beating Burundi 1-0.

Other than Madagascar and Nigeria, other teams that have qualified for the Round of 16 include Morocco, Egypt and Algeria.

Madagascar will now play one of the best third place teams from either Group A, C or D.

Nigeria on the other hand will play the runner up from Group F, which remains very open until this stage.

AFCON continues until July 19 when the final game will be played.
