Nigeria’s electoral commission has denied allegations that one of its officials had been offered a huge bribe to favour the opposition presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said reports that the Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Kashim Gaidam, had been offered a $1 million bribe were false.

“The Adamawa INEC REC completely disassociates himself from the allegation that he had an offer of $1m and a house in Dubai as no offer whatsoever was ever made to him by any one,” INCE Said via its official Twitter handle.

The bribery reports broke out on Monday, alleging that Gaidam had rejected an offer from Atiku. The reports also sugested that the offer also came with a house offer in Dubai.

“I’ve never had any contact with Atiku all my life. I can state without fear of contradiction that Atiku probably does not know how I look, because I’ve never met him personally, all my life. I was shocked to read what was credited to me by some unscrupulous persons,” Gaidam said.

Nigeria, which is Africa’s most populous nation, will now hold its presidential elections on 23 February, after it failed to hold the vote on 16 February as initially scheduled.

INEC postponed the vote citing logistical and operational challenges.
