Nigeria’s electoral commission has permitted the resumption of political campaigns in the country following the postponement of the general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pushed forward the elections by one week, setting the new date for presidential elections at 23 February.

Ahead of the initial polling date, 16 February, INEC had closed campaigns on Friday. But now following the postponement of the vote, the authority announced on Monday a re-opening of the campaign period, which will now end on Thursday.

“After consultation with political parties, the Commission has approved that campaigns by parties and candidates can resume forthwith to end by midnight of Thursday, February 2019,” INEC said in a statement.

The Nigerian presidential elections have attracted 73 candidates, but is seen to be a two-horse race between current President Muhammadu Buhari and a former vice president Atiku Abubakar.

More than 84 million Nigerians are registered to vote in the election
