At least four people were killed on Tuesday in a stampede at a rally for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari’s rally took place at stadium in the southern city of Port Harcourt. The event turned deadly as a panicked crowd charged its way through a locked gate following the end of Buhari’s speech.
The stampede left many others injured.
The incident came just three days before the February 16 presidential vote.
Nigeria’s election has attracted 73 candidates, but pollsters project the race to mainly be between current leader Buhari and his former ally Atiku Abubakar.
The two are expected to sign a peace accord on Wednesday, pledging to accept the result of the vote and to maintain peace.
More than 80 million voters are registered to take part in the vote in the country that has a population of more than 190 million.
Ahead of the vote, the electoral authority INEC said it was ready to hold the vote, and would ensure a smooth and credible process.
