Read < 1 minute

nigeraiaThe Ikeja police barracks that collapsed earlier on Sunday failed integrity tests on two occasions. Confirming the statement was NEMA (National Emergency Management Authority ) boss, Yakubu Suleiman who also disclosed that the victims of the building collapse included a police officer and the officer’s relative.

According to a resident in the area, police had been directed to leave the building more than twice and even had their doors removed.

“We thought they would leave but they didn’t leave. I think that is when the government should have come for this demolition exercise,” he told journalists.

So far, an order for the demolition of the building had been issued by Lagos State Commisioner of police, Fatai Owoseni, who also monitored the demolition of the collapsed W block.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation has seen frequent building collapses over the past years with officials blaming contractors for using cheap material in construction.
