Nigeria beats Iceland to throw Group D wide open
Nigeria has today beaten Iceland 2-0 in their second 2018 FIFA World Cup game, putting their quest for progression well in their hands.
The Super Eagles went into the game knowing that a loss would automatically bundle them out of the tournament.
They did the job in stylish fashion however, recording the important victory against the team that held Argentina 1-1 last week. The goals came through Ahmed Musa, with Iceland missing a penalty late in the game.
The West African’s win meant so much for the Nigerians, but even more for Argentina. Had the Super Eagles lost, Argentina too would have been eliminated from the competition with a game still to play.
The South Americans lost to Croatia 3-0 on Thursday, having drawn with Iceland in their first game.
With just one point, the Lionel Messi-led side will have to beat Nigeria in the next round of games and hope that Croatia beats Iceland.
Group D now remains open, as Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland all have a chance to qualify as runners up. Croatia’s win ensured they will end the group stage as winners of the group.
