New York Woman Accused of Marrying 10 Men Without Getting Divorced to Most

Read < 1 minute

A New York woman is facing criminal charges after authorities say she got married 10 times without ever getting divorced.

Liana Barrientos first tied the knot when she was 23 in Westchester County, New York, to Mohamed Gerbil in November 1999. She followed that by marrying Ahmed Allam in November 2001, Habibur Rahman in November 2001 as well, Davit Koridze in February 2002, Duran Goktepe in March 2002, Aliaksandr Paharelau in March 2002, Vakhtang Dzneladze in May 2002, Rashid Rajput in July 2002, Kakhaber Khorbaladze in August 2002, and Salle Keita in March 2010. Her last marriage application stated that it was her “first and only” marriage.

Barrientos is charged with offering a false instrument after allegedly obtaining marriage certificates with 10 men between 1999 and 2010.

She never filed for divorce, the criminal complaint alleges, though several of her husbands, seven of whom are from so-called “red-flagged” countries including Egypt, Turkey, Georgia, Pakistan and Mali, filed divorce paperwork after using her to file applications to become lawful permanent residents of the United States.

Barrientos could spend four years in prison.
