New report shows 12 million Ugandans are food insecure

Read < 1 minute

A new report from the Ugandan government indicates that 12 million people in the country are food insecure.

Of those, 1.3 million are in urgent need of emergency relief. The report shows that Ugandans in 88 districts across the country are getting by on one meal or half a meal a day. The agriculture ministry says prolonged drought is to blame. An army worm infestation is also threatening crops in the country. The news comes as several other countries are facing food shortages.

It is a blow to the region as Uganda is considered the bread basket of East Africa.
