Naby Keita ruled out of Guinea’s final group stage game with thigh injury
Guinea’s midfielder Naby Keita is set to miss his side’s final AFCON group stage match against Burundi on Sunday after he suffered a thigh injury in Wednesday’s defeat to Nigeria.
The 24-year-old was replaced by Alhassane Bangoura in the 71st minute of the game against the Super Eagles, which his side went on to lose 1-0.
Keita was a huge doubt for the 2019 AFCON tournament after sustaining groin injury in the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona on May 1.
He however declared himself fit to feature for the National Elephants and played 62 minutes in the first game against Madagascar, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The loss of Keita to injury could bring an end to his AFCON tournament. It is not clear how long he will be on the sidelines, but projections are that he could be out for a few weeks.
Guinea is currently ranked third in Group with just one point. Nigeria tops the pool with six, followed by Madagascar with 4. Burundi are last having lost its two games so far.
The 2019 AFCON continues today with clashes pitting Mauritania against Angola, Cameroon against Ghana and Benin against Guinea Bissau.
Teams that have already qualified for the Round of 16 stage include, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Algeria.
