Some of the world’s most popular musicians and entertainers are now joining people in Uganda in demanding the release of MP and musician Robert Kyagulanyi, also known by his stage name, Bobi Wine.
More than 80 artists, activists and politicians, including Femi Kuti, Angelique Kidjo, U2’s Adam Clayton and Chrissie Hyde of The Pretenders signed a statement condemning what they say was “the arrest, imprisonment and vicious, life-threatening physical attack on Bobi Wine by Ugandan government forces.
Other artists and activists took to social media to show their concern and support.
The U.S. State Department also expressed concern over Wine’s safety. In an email written Tuesday, the Americans stated ““We are watching the situation very closely with regards to MP Kyagulanyi. “We urge the government of Uganda to show the world that it listens to the voices of its people, and abides by its own laws.”
Wine’s musical nemesis, Bebe Cool finally spoke up about the situation amid pressure from fans. However he did not give them the statement they were expecting. Cool replied on his Instagram account with the caption “Sometimes silence is GOLDEN. Kyovolaba nsilikamu (that’s why I keep quiet sometimes)” He has since updated his profile picture to one with president Museveni at his recently concluded Golden Heart concert.
Robert Kyagulanyi and several other politicians were arrested after President Yoweri Museveni’s motorcade was pelted with stones in the Northwestern town of Arua on August 13th 2018.
There have been reports that Mr. Kyagulanyi has been severely beaten and tortured and however the President denies these allegations claiming that military doctors have examined Kyagulanyi and confirmed that he is fine. His wife and relatives were barred from sitting in on the military court proceedings where he was charged with illegal firearms possession.
Mr. Kyagulanyi is due to appear in court on Thursday.
