A university in Mozambique has banned dreadlocks in a bizarre move to streamline its students’ dress codes, local media report.
Other than the dreadlocks, the new regulation will also bar students from wearing sandals, shorts and tight dresses within the institution.
According to a picture posted online by a former journalist confirming the ban, the University of Zambeze prohibited its students from going into the campus dressed in such outfits, but did not give a reason for the ban.
The letter was addressed in Portuguese.
The Mozambican university located in the city of Beira made the ruling one day after Zambian authorities issued a warning against “indecent dressing in public”.
Twitter users in the country went to Twitter to give their reactions on the ban, with most appearing to have been shocked particularly by the ban on dreadlocks.
