Mother & daughter use live snakes to raise awareness about the animals in South Africa

Read < 1 minute

Soweto’s Vilakazi Street was once home to former President Nelson Mandela, but now has another drawcard.

A mother-and-daughter team is educating members of their community about snakes. The 19-year-old Lwandle and her mother, Lindiwe Mngomezulu, run an educational snake “show” from their home in Orlando West, in Vilakazi Street, Soweto.

The street has become a buzzing tourist hub, and when Mngomezulu gives you directions to her house over the phone, she directs you past “Tutu’s house” and the “Nelson Mandela Museum”.

The mother and daughter team has become so well-known that they have made international headlines. Lindiwe allows curiosity-seekers to get a close-up look at the non-venomous snakes she keeps in her home, and she drapes them over tourists’ shoulders for a small fee.

CCTV’s Julie Scheier has more.
