Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca crowned new African football champions

Morocco’s football side Wydad Casablanca are the new African champions after beating Egyptian giants Al Ahly by a solitary goal on Saturday in the CAF Champions League final.
The win means Wydad have won the title for the second time in the competition’s history, the first having come in 1992.
Walid El Karty nodded the lone goal in the 69th minute to give the home team a 2-1 aggregate triumph, after they had forced a 1-1 draw in Egyptian coastal city Alexandria last weekend.
That victory bridged a 25-year gap for Wydad, who defeated Al Hilal of Sudan in their last win of the competition.
The Moroccan side will now represent Africa at the FIFA Club World Cup which will be played in the UAE in December.

This will be the side’s first appearance at the tournament, which will also see European giants Real Mardid participate.
Al Ahly are the record winners of the CAF Champions League competition, having won it eight times, and were looking to extend that record to nine.
The last time they won the trophy was back in 2013, when they beat South Africa’s Orlando Pirates.
