Morocco foils migration attempts, arrests 168
Morocco announced on Saturday that its navy has foiled attempts to migrate across the Mediterranean and arrested 168 migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Moroccan Navy Coast Guard, on patrol in the Mediterranean, intercepted on Wednesday and Thursday, several makeshift boats, kayaks and jet skis, with 168 migrants onboard, official news agency MAP quoted a military source as saying.
They were brought safely to various Moroccan ports in the Mediterranean after receiving first aid, and handed over to the local authorities, the agency added.
Morocco has become a hub for African migrants seeking to reach Europe. Thousands of migrants try to flee poverty and unrest in Africa each year through Morocco to Europe, either by land or by sea.
