The Moroccan Ministry of Health reported on Saturday 199 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 5,910 in the country.

The number of recovered cases increased to 2,461 with 137 new recoveries, while some 70 patients are being treated in intensive care units, Mohamed El Youbi, director of epidemiology at the Ministry of Health, said at his daily briefing.

El Youbi said that 186 deaths from COVID-19 were reported so far.

In addition, 9,017 people who have had contact with the infected patients are still under medical surveillance.

The official underlined the stability of the coronavirus mortality rate in Morocco, which stands at 3.1 percent, adding that the recovery rate rose to 41.6 percent.

The regions with the largest number of cases are Casablanca with 1,590, and Marrakech with 1,176.

On April 18, Morocco extended the state of medical emergency until May 20 in an effort to strengthen preventive measures to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus.
