Morocco and Egypt advance to Olympic football tournament quarterfinals
Morocco and Egypt both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Olympic football tournament after winning their final group games on Tuesday.
Egypt stunned Spain 2-1 in Nantes courtesy of goals from Ibrahim Adel either side of halftime. Samu Omorodion scored a consolation goal for Spain in the 90th minute. Victory meant Egypt finished level on points and goal difference with Spain in Group C. But the North Africans won the group due to their superior head-to-head record.
In Group B, Morocco thumped Iraq 3-0 to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time since 1972.
Amir Richardson opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Soufiane Rahimi netted his fourth goal of the campaign shortly before the half-hour mark. Abde Ezzalzouli’s curling effort sealed an emphatic win nine minutes before halftime.
Morocco also finished the round as group winners due to their shock win against fellow quarterfinalists Argentina in the opening group match.
Guinea were not so lucky and failed to qualify for the last eight following a 3-0 defeat to the United States. The West Africans finished bottom of Group A, having not picked up a single point.
Mali also crashed out of the tournament after losing 1-0 to Paraguay in their final match in Group D. They finished third in the table with one point after drawing with Israel in their opening group fixture.
Egypt will play Paraguay and Morocco will face the United States for a place in the semifinals. Both games will take place on Friday.
