Moroccan authorities seizes 589 kg of cannabis

Moroccan security officers seized 589 kilograms of cannabis in the southwestern city of Agadir and arrested one person, Moroccan police said in a statement on Sunday.
The banned substance was concealed on board a truck at the industrial district of Ait Melloul in the suburb of Agadir.
The authorities seized the truck and arrested the driver, aged 49, the statement said.
The drug was intended for international traffic, the statement said, adding that the driver who has lengthy criminal records, was placed in custody, while investigations are underway.
Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world’s largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
