
More than 20 killed in Kinshasa anti-Kabila protests
More than 20 people were killed on Tuesday in clashes between anti-Kabila protesters and security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, over President Joseph Kabila’s failure to give up power.
Kabila’s 15-year rule was due to end on Monday midnight, but that was extended to 2018.
The country’s main opposition leaders have accused the President of planning to cling on to power.
The electoral authority however says the country is not able to hold elections due to logistical incapacities.
President Kabila has now formed a 74-member transitional government to lead the vast central African state until elections are held in 2018.
The BBC reports witnessed to say that some of the dead were shot at close range by the security forces.
DR Congo has not had a smooth transfer of power since independence from Belgium in 1960.
Joseph Kabila took over power in 2001 following the assassination of his father Laurent Kabila.
The country’s constitution bars him from running for a third term in office.
