More than 100 students in a school in Kenya’s Nakuru Country were placed in quarantine after officials reported more than 70 confirmed cases at the institution.

The county’s health services department issued a statement on Thursday confirming a total of 73 confirmed cases, out of which 68 were students.

“We wish to inform you the public that 68 students and 5 teachers in Bahati Girls Secondary School have tested positive for COVID-19 and are in isolation. 115 other students are on quarantine,” the statement read in part.

The department said that a student, who tested positive for COVID-19, developed some complications and was transferred to an isolation and management centre.

“A medical team is monitoring the condition of the students and teachers in isolation and quarantine at the school,” it added.

The department assured the public that it was monitoring the situation across the county and COVID-19 prevention and management measures are being conducted for learning institutions.

The news comes a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced new measures to tackle a resurgence of the pandemic within the country.

While the president directed that examination classes already in session continue, he ordered the remaining classes to resume in January next year.

Last month, students in grade 4, class eight and form four were allowed back in class as part of the gradual re-opening of schools.

A number of learning institutions across the country, however, have since reported cases of students and/or teachers testing positive for COVID-19 prompting some of them to close.

Nakuru County has emerged as one of the areas registering increasing numbers of coronavirus cases, behind the capital Nairobi and the port city of Mombasa.
