Miss Iraq 2017: Kurdish contestant wins
In a ceremony held in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad on Thursday, Kurdish beauty pageant contestant, Vian Amer Noori, was voted “Miss Iraq 2017”.
The 23-year-old is originally from the province of Sulaimani, in Northeast Iraq, and currently works for an insurance company in Baghdad.
“I will work to promote women’s rights in the country,” Noori told local media.
At the same pageant, Masty Hama (Miss Halabja Hawraman) was crowned as first runner-up, Marina Roqan (Miss Rusafa-East Baghdad) was crowned as second runner-up, and Sara Abdulwahid (Miss Erbil) was crowned as third runner-up respectively.
Abdulwahid told local media that she had many plans in mind after receiving third place, but that her main focus would be on founding a hospital for children who suffer from cancer.
Miss Iraq was founded in 1947 and in 1972 the country participated in Miss Universe for the first time.
The competition is apparently in talks to re-join Miss Universe next year.
