Militants destroyed a communication mast and targeted a police camp in Kenya’s northeast Wajir County in a dawn attack, the police said on Saturday.

Thomas Ngeywa, Wajir County police commander, confirmed the incident in Khorof Kharar, where the suspected al-Shabaab militants also targeted a police camp at 2:00 a.m. in an attack that was executed simultaneously.

“I can confirm that suspected members of al-Shabaab militants carried out an attack in Khorof Kharar police camp and also destroyed a communication mast belonging to Safaricom early Saturday morning,” Ngeywa told reporters in Wajir town.

A police report said the huge firepower from the militants forced the security officers who were manning the camp at the time of the attack to seek refuge in the nearby bushes after they were overwhelmed.

The latest incident came after earlier intelligence reports suggested that the militants were planning to carry out attacks in the region.

This is the second terror incident in the county in a month.
