Mexico’s Foreign Minister, Claudia Ruiz Massieu, is demanding for an urgent enquiry into the deaths of 12 tourists among which eight are Mexicans. The tourists were killed in a foiled attack by Egypt airstrike that is said to have been intended for suspected terrorists.
The foreign minister said this after arriving in Egypt early today accompanied by the relatives of the Mexicans who perished in the attack. Claudia Ruiz is expected to visit the survivors of the attack. At least six injured Mexicans are admitted in Al-Fouad Hospital in Cairo.
The tourists were in the Western Desert when they were mistaken for the jihadists who abducted and beheaded an Egyptian according to the Egypt government. The country’s security forces were pursuing the terrorist at that moment.
Western Desert is a popular destination for tourists especially tour groups but it is also known for being a hide out for militants, a reason why western embassies have travel warnings against it.
