Manchester United’s Ivorian defender Eric Bailly is set to spend a lengthy time on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury during the Red Devils’ 4-0 defeat at Chelsea.

Bailly was forced off in the 52 minute while his team was down by two goals from Pedro Rodríguez and Gary Cahill.

The 22-year-old Cote d’Ivoire defender picked the problem after he clashed with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

His manager Jose Mourinho confirmed the injury, saying he feared it is a bad one.

“I am afraid it is a bad injury,” he said. “It is in his knee, the ligament area. He feels it is really bad.”

Bailly joined United in the Summer from Spanish side Villareal in a deal worth about £30m.
