South African club Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday issued a statement following persistent speculation regarding the future of Coach Pitso Mosimane.

Several local media reports have in the past claimed that Mosimane would leave the defending league champions citing a number of issues including rising tensions with the club management and disputes in hiring of personnel.

Some local media outlets have even gone as far as reporting on potential candidates who could take over from the 55-year-old.

While the club did not clarify the position of Mosimane’s contract, it noted that for several months there had been “speculation and the false statements” concerning several issues including the contract of Mosimane.

“It is the policy of Mamelodi Sundowns not to respond or to comment on speculations or false statements,” the statement read in part.

Sundowns said that any announcements regarding Mosimane’s contract and other club issues will be made at the relevant time.

“In line with the policy and culture of Mamelodi Sundowns announcements on any matter which is important to the Club, including Pitso Mosimane’s contract, will be made when the Club deems it appropriate.”

Mosimane has made it clear before he is keen to remain with the Brazilians beyond the end of his current deal but the club’s refusal to discuss him and his future makes it unclear whether they want to retain his services.

Mosimane has been in charge of Mamelodi Sundowns since 2012. He has won several domestic and international honours with them including four Premier Soccer League titles, the CAF Champions League, the CAF Super Cup and the Telkom and Nedbank Cups.

In 2016, he was named African Coach of the Year at the CAF awards in Abuja, Nigeria.
