
Mamelodi Sundowns crowned 2018/19 Absa Premiership champions

Mamelodi Sundowns won the 2018/2019 Absa Premiership after defeating Free State Stars 1-0 at Goble Park in Bethlehem, South Africa.
Sundowns went into the final game of the season needing to at least match the result by Orlando Pirates to win the title. Sundowns led the table on 56 points while Pirates trailed them on 54 points.
The win meant Orlando Pirates, who defeated Polokwane City 3-0, finished as runners-up, two points behind Sundowns.
Phakamani Mahlambi got the all-important goal for Sundowns on 43 minutes.
Thembinkosi Lorch (2) and Vincent Pule netted for the Pirates in the first half at the Orlando Stadium.
The latest championship is Sundowns’ ninth Premier Soccer League (PSL) title & 12th top flight title since 1971.
Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane also became the fourth coach in the PSL era to win four league titles, joining Gordon Igesund, Ted Dumitru & Gavin Hunt.
Defeat to Sundowns also confirmed Free State Stars’ relegation from the top flight.
Maritzburg United finished 15th following a 1-1 draw with Baroka FC and will now play in the promotion/relegation play-offs.
