The Malian migrant who scaled an apartment building in Paris to rescue a baby that was dangling from a balcony has been made a French citizen.

Mamoudou Gassama scaled four floors from the outside of the building with his bare hands to save the four-year-old who had been left unsupervised.

His brave act went viral on social media, with thousands praising the 22-year-old.

Following the incident, Gassama, who had been in France illegally, was hosted by President Emmanuel Macron, who thanked him and promised to draft him into the fire service.

On Wednesday, The French government officially offered the Malian its citizenship, praising his bravery.

“This act of great bravery exemplifies the values which help unite our national community, such as courage, selflessness, altruism and taking care of the most vulnerable,” said the official decree announcing the granting of his citizenship.

Gassama earned the nickname Spiderman, as people compared his building climbing act to the fictional superhero.
