Malawi to revoke licenses of contractors for doing substandard work

Malawi’s Minister of Transport and Public Works has warned contractors of the risk of losing their licenses for doing sub-standard work, reports Nyasa Times.
Contractors that have their licenses revoked will never be given a chance to apply for another project.
The government is working towards attaining standard quality, delivery within time frames and budget according to the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappies Mhango.
The Minister said the government is tired of shoddy work and will be arresting the contractors and prosecuting them accordingly.
“We cannot be doing the very same things every year as if there aren’t other things to concentrate on. However, I am happy to say that things will change. From now onwards, any contractor who will construct something of low quality will be punished severely,” Mhango warned.
The Minister pointed at the contractors developing roads that have frustrated the country’s development.
The government of Malawi has started offering contracts to indigenous companies as one way of local empowerment through the ‘best buy Malawian,’ strategy however some of the contractors are not taking responsibility to do a good job and provide poor quality services.
