Malawi has been struggling with an outbreak of armyworm, which authorities say killed around half of the country’s maize crop last year.
Authorities and stakeholders have been tackling the crisis – with a degree of success – but several districts are still affected.
The outbreak was first reported late in 2016, spreading fast across the country and destroying most farms.
Malawian authorities have been distributing pesticides to farmers to try and contain the armyworm outbreak.
Research however indicates the worms have become resistant to the pesticides – potentially a far larger problem than previously thought.
Some farmers have since resorted to improvised ways to deal with the pests, none of which in entirely successful. They are however optimistic that a solution will be found soon to rid the country of the damaging pests.
