Malagasy festival celebrates arrival of humpback whales

Read < 1 minute

A special ceremony was recently held to welcome some of Madagascar’s biggest and most important visitors. The ceremony was also meant to boost both tourism and the dwindling whale population.

According to Reuters, humpback whales are among the world’s largest at up to 60 feet long and migrate thousands of miles between their summer and winter feeding grounds. They were listed as an endangered species in 1970 after decades of fishing caused their populations to plummet.
