Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to repair relations between Egypt, Palestine

Read < 1 minute

The President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas is in Cairo for a two-day visit. Egyptian analysts say it’s an attempt to repair relations, following months of tension.

Relations between Egypt and President Mahmoud Abbas’ administration have been tense over a range of issues, including Cairo’s contacts with factions in the Gaza Strip that did not involve Abbas’ Palestinian Authority.

Relations also soured when Egypt in December withdrew a draft resolution in the UN Security Council against Israeli settlements. The draft was later resubmitted by other countries and adopted by the council.
