Madagascar elections to be held in November

Read < 1 minute

Madagascar citizens will head to the polls in November to either re-elect the current president, Andry Rajoelina, or choose his successor. The Independent National Electoral Commission set November 9 as the date for the first round of the election and December 20 as the date for the second round if there is a runoff.

Prime Minister Christian Ntsay urged the country to stay calm as the electoral process plays out.

He also called on all politicians to respect the principles of national solidarity to ensure that the elections are held peacefully.

“We must have a president who will begin his term of office next January”, Ntsay said.

The timetable for the legislative and municipal elections, which are due to take place just after the presidential elections, will be announced at a later date.
