Liverpool FC legends to visit South Africa in honor of Nelson Mandela
English Premier League side Liverpool FC’s former players are scheduled to visit South Africa later this month to honor former President Nelson Mandela ahead of what would have been his 100th birthday.
Some of the Kop’s legendary players such as Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and John Barnes will make a three-day visit to the country, where they will hold a coaching clinic with underprivileged children at the Metrostars Football Development Centre in Alberton, Johannesburg.
Mandela, a revolutionary anti-apartheid activist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, passed away on 5 December 2013 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection.
Madiba – as he was fondly known – is widely regarded as the father of African freedom.
The visit by Liverpool FC legends has been dubbed as the #Liverpool4Madiba Experience, and has been sponsored by Favor Energy Drink and Hilton Hotel.
This three-day tour will also unveil the building of the Nelson Mandela Memorial in Liverpool City.
The memorial artwork will be created on the lake island at the Toxteth Park and launched in June 2018. It will be known as Mandela Island, and the bridge linking the island with the park will be called Freedom Bridge.
