Liverpool condemns discriminatory chants against Mohamed Salah from Chelsea fans
Liverpool has condemned discriminatory chants aimed at star player Mohamed Salah from Chelsea fans, saying the act is “dangerous and disturbing.”
A video showing Chelsea fans chanting abusive songs aimed at Salah surfaced online earlier this week, ahead of the clash between the two sides at Anfield on Saturday.
“Already this season, we have seen repulsive discriminatory abuse inside stadiums in England, Europe and across the world; abuse that was captured on devices and put into the public domain. We have also witnessed numerous hateful attacks on social media.
“This behaviour needs to be called out for what it is – unadulterated bigotry,” a statement from Liverpool read in part.
The Merseyside club called upon the relevant authorities to clamp down on such incidences and ensure perpetrators are punished.
This latest incident comes on the back of a string of racist abuse against black players across Europe. Some of the players that have been on the receiving end of the racist incidents include, Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Moise Kean.
In its statement, Liverpool said it was working together with Merseyside police to “ascertain the facts around this footage with the aim of identifying individuals featuring in it.”
