A 10 year old girl was killed by a lion in her home’s compound in south eastern Zimbabwe, reports local media, Chronicle.

Mitchell Mucheni had gone to the back of their house to relieve herself at night when the lion pounced. Her 34 year old aunt, Mawonei Muchacha who was waiting for her found her niece’s body being dragged away by the lion.

A neighbor and the aunt used a torch to follow the trail of blood to find the girl’s body.

“They were guided by a trail of bloodstains until they stumbled on Mitchell’s lifeless body, some 300 metres from the homestead,” police spokesperson Kudakwashe Dehwa told the Chronicle.

There have been increased cases of animal attacks in the region, with animals straying from the park. Chiredzi, where this latest tragedy occurred, is close to Gonarezhou National Park.
