A group of mourners’ tour around Kenya’s Lake Naivasha ended tragically when their plane crashed on Thursday killing one woman and injuring five other people.

The light plane which had six occupants was flying across the lake, some 104 km (65 miles) northwest of the capital Nairobi, when the accident occurred at around midday.

The woman is a Polish national while the pilot is Kenyan and the four other survivors are from the United Kingdom and had been in Kenya for a few days.

The group was in Naivasha to mourn with a friend who lost his wife last Sunday.

According to eye witnesses, the plane had not been in the air long when it started spinning in the sky and crashed at Sanctuary farm before bursting into flames.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, Naivasha police boss Titus Munyoki said.

Hospital staff said the pilot was in a critical condition and had received burns to 60 percent of his body while the other four passengers who are all from the United Kingdom are stable.

Police and the civil aviation authority investigators said they are trying to establish the causes of the crash.
