A delegation of top Kenyan ministers will attend an International Criminal Court (ICC) meeting in The Hague on Wednesday, in the latest battle over charges against Deputy President William Ruto and Kenyan journalist Joshua Sang.

The delegation will be lobbying for a full independent audit of the system used by the ICC to identify witnesses, claiming allegations of “irregular procuring and coaching” of witnesses in the case.

The delegation will also try to rally support from other countries to get this audit through and to ensure that Article 68 – the use of recanted evidence – is not applied to Deputy President Ruto’s case because the law was introduced after the proceedings began.

There is support for Kenya – 190 MPs have signed a petition – which officials say includes cross party support.

The petition also has support of the attorneys-generals and African Union Justice ministers, which endorsed it at a meeting in Ethiopia last week.

Essentially Kenya wants this case dropped as was the case with similar charges against the country’s President Uhuru Kenyatta.
