South Africa’s Kevin Anderson followed up his straight sets win against Pablo Carreño Busta in the Round of 16 at the Vienna Open with a similar victory over match-favourite Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the quarterfinals.

Anderson defeated the fourth seed 6-4, 7-6 on Friday in a closely-contested match which saw only one successful break of serve prior to the second set tie-breaker.

Anderson made a fast start breaking Medvedev in the first game of the set and then taking a 2-0 lead. The remainder of the set went with serve and Anderson converted his first set point to claim it 6-4.

The second set was an even closer affair with both men holding serve and forcing it into a tie-breaker. Medvedev raced into a 2-0 lead but Anderson fought back superbly to take a 5-2 lead. He then held off a spirited fight back by the Russian before he eventually converted his match point to take the tie-breaker 7-5 and win 6-4, 7-6.

The 2018 champion will face either Dominic Thiem of Austria or another Russian Andrey Rublev.
