Kenya’s DPP Noordin Haji (Front-Center) addresses the press after receiving a report from Haki Africa.

Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions has pledged to form an investigation team to probe alleged killings of suspects by police officers in the coastal region of the country.

DPP Noordin Haji made the announcement after receiving a report on extrajudicial killings from a Haki Africa, a human rights organization in the East African country.

“As we fight corruption vigorously, we will also fight such impunity. If there are officers who are involved, they should know that this is not sanctioned and we will investigate and prosecute them,” local Nation newspaper quotes Haji.

The DPP promised to investigate the incidences conclusively to ensure any officers who killed suspects are apprehended.

“I am concerned that this is happening at the coast and other parts of the country. The government does not condone such killings and if anything we should term them as extragovernmental killings and not extrajudicial killings,” he added.

In its report, Haki Africa handed a list of 34 people who it says were killed by the police in the coastal city of Mombasa.

“We do not condone crime. We want actions to be carried out legally. The killings have been worsening and what we want is to find an amicable solution,” Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid said.
