Defending Zambian FAZ/MTN Super League champions ZESCO United missed an opportunity to make up ground on leaders Forest Rangers after they could only draw 1-1 against Kansanshi Dynamos on Sunday.
Kenyan striker Jesse Were equalized for ZESCO in the 73rd minute after Kansanshi, who were promoted last season, took a 54th minute lead courtesy of a Clement Mwape own goal. That was Were’s 12th league goal of the season.
Meanwhile, Power Dynamos, who began the restart nine points behind the league leaders, was also held to a 1-1 draw against struggling Buildcon on Sunday.
Biston Banda gave Dynamos a 15th minute lead but they were unable to protect or add to it as Chanda Mushili leveled the game a minute into the second half.
Following these results, ZESCO remains fourth in the league table on 43 points having played 25 games. Forest Rangers lead the way with 46 points followed by NAPSA Stars on 45 points and Green Eagles on 44 points. However, Rangers and Eagles have both played one game less.
Power Dynamos are seventh on 38 points while Buildcon is in 15th position with 26 points.
Forest Rangers and ZANACO were due to play in the first game of the league’s restart on Saturday but the game was postponed.
The Zambian Super League was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) announced that the league was to resume with the completion of the outstanding games and run until August 30.
