Marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge won the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday in a time of 2:02:37 in the United Kingdom.

Kenya’s Kipchoge finished ahead of Ethiopians Mosinet Geremew and Mule Wasihun, who clocked 2:02:55 and 2:03:16 respectively.

Kipchoge broke clear of the leading pack consisting of Geremew and Wasihun at Mile 25. Highly-rated 22-year-old Ethiopian Shura Kitata dropped off the pace at Mile 24 after staying with the leading pack for much of the race.

The win saw Kipchoge break the course record and set the second fastest marathon time on record.

Kipchoge set the world record at the Berlin Marathon in September 2018 running in time of 2:01:39. He erased 78 seconds from the previous world record.

This was Kipchoge’s first competitive race since his record-breaking run.

Kipchoge also became the first male runner in London Marathon history to win the race four times.

Kipchoge’s three previous London marathon wins came in 2:04:42 in 2015, 2:03:25 in 2016 and 2:04:17 in 2018.

Kipchoge, who is also the reigning Olympic marathon champion, improved his impressive race record to 12 marathon wins out of 13.

Britain’s Mo Farah, who was expected to serve up an exciting face-off with Kipchoge, finished fifth in 2:05:39.
