Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson has asked the opposition NASA Coalition to cancel its planned demonstrations aiming to force some of the body’s officers into resigning ahead of the October 26 repeat presidential poll.

Wafula Chebukati in a memorandum released on Monday pleaded with the opposition to cancel the protests scheduled for Tuesday 26 September, instead calling for a joint meeting set for Wednesday.

“The commission…writes to request that you put-off the planned protests to enable the joint consultative meeting scheduled for Wednesday the 27th of September 2017 to address the concerns raised by the various stakeholders,” the memo read.

NASA is yet to respond to that call, having initially its supporters to turn up for the protests in the capital, Nairobi.

Last week, opposition leader Raila Odinga published names of 12 IEBC officials whom he accused of involvement in irregularities during the August 8 elections.

Among those the opposition wants to resign include IEBC C.E.O. Ezra Chiloba.

Chairperson Chebukati suspended three officers of the commission last week, including ICT Director James Muhati, whose name was among the 12 published.
